Online Storage for Entrepreneurs

These days it’s likely that your most valuable business (and personal) assets are located not in the bank...but…on your hard drive.

And, even if you have an extra external hard drive to back up your data like I do, it’s still vulnerable to damage if your office or home suffers a disaster.

Hence the evolution of a plethora of online data storage and sharing services.

Tech Crunch did a beautiful job of reviewing all the major players in this important arena.

You can read the review of a dozen different options to protect your precious data by clicking here.

I chose to give Streamload a try first because…well…it looked the coolest and it had most of the features that are important to an entrepreneur like share-ability and security.

However, after just one day of actively using the service I’ve already experienced problems with the software.

My files took a long time to upload and the online software had trouble loading in my FireFox browser.

So, I just opened a free 1 gigabyte demo account at Box.net and I can already tell just by the look of the operating environment that I’m going to like it better.

I’m interested to hear your comments on the various online file storage services so comment away!

Adam, I'm trying out Mozy and liking it so far. It is purely for file backup, runs in the background and has worked like a charm. I want to check out other services, though - especially Box.net - I've heard it's excellent.

Hi Adam, online backup is inherently a touch business and very hard on technology. However, many new companies have not realized these. I've seen many small companies offering free storage while losing more and more money. This happened before with XDrive, and now is happening with lots of other companies, like Box.net, streamload.com, Mozy, etc. The fact is these companies have not developed any new technologies, they are just throwing more free storage. This just doesn't work. Having worked in this industry before, I don't think this is a sustainable model. Those companies cannot make money, so there is no technology innovation.

There seems to be an exception. A few weeks ago I tried http://www.DriveHQ.com/ service, which was offered to Roxio Easy Media Creator users at a big discount. The service is very impressive. I particularly like the client software, DriveHQ FileManager and WWWBackup, very professional look and feel, very easy to use. Try it
